Having a horse of your own may be every child’s golden dream, but buying and keeping a horse is no child’s play. Okay you have fallen in love with the idea of buying a horse and have found a flashy looking equine, so now what? The first thing is to reconnect with your goals and ask if this horse will meet all those requirements. Maybe you are keen to go on adventurous hunting trips with this creature or maybe you smile at the thought of displaying your prized possession during an animal show or competition. If simple trail rides is what you have in mind, do not purchase show animals that carry very high prize tags, it does not serve the purpose. Do not purchase a young horse and try to train them yourself if you do not have enough skills to do it. The unfortunate combination of untrained rider with an untrained horse simply spells disaster. Always be patient and take time to learn, it can avoid injury to you and your horse that arise form your ignorance of the right thing to do.
Common sense suggests you make you initial visit with a good and trusted friend who will help to ensure you do not choose unwisely. It is not uncommon for people in their enthusiasm to end up buying a horse that will be too much of a handful for them if they do not have someone along to temper their decision. Your experienced friend can also ride the horse for you to assess if it would work for you. Do not accept no for an answer from an owner - if you cannot ride the horse, walk away.
