Warming Heat Up

Whether from exposure on radio, television, or the internet, most people are familiar with the idea of global warming. Media focus on the issue has sharpened in recent years. Not everyone agrees on the highly-debated topic, but concern is reasonable. After all, your descendants will have a rough time if predictions are true.

Fighting against global warming does not have to take a lot of effort or money out of your pocket. In recent years, too much of the main focus of the efforts has been on energy efficient vehicles and appliances. Not having the financial means to make these investments is fine, there are cheaper and simpler ways to join the efforts to help our planet.

One of the biggest chances that you have to help prevent global warming or lessen its impact is in your home. Are there electrical appliances, like your computer, turned on when you aren’t using them? It is also likely that you will be saving money through this method.

A general rule of thumb is to turn off the appliances or lights in your house when they are not in use in order to ease up on the electric consumption. The best part about this approach is that it is a free example of how you can help, and in addition to being free, it might save you money. Another helpful tip is putting on a pullover and turning down the heat. Even a few degrees can help reduce the toxic emissions that come from your home.

By getting rid of the old standard light bulbs, and replacing them with energy efficient ones, you can also help. You can also save money by switching all or even most of your lights to energy efficient bulbs. Many traditional light bulbs have to be replaced frequently, but energy efficient ones last for at least a year or two without needing to be replaced. It might take some price shopping efforts, but you can buy these energy saving bulbs for five dollars in a multi-pack.

Renters, in addition to people who own their home, can help out against global warming. If you feel cold air sneaking into your house when it shouldn’t, speak to your landlord about making window repairs. Your landlord can further save money through changes in the hot water heater or the addition of an insulation blanket.

If you cannot buy a hybrid (or similarly energy efficient vehicle) you do not have to worry, as there are other ways to make your transportation less strenuous on the environment. For example, are all of your driving trips actually needed? If not, consider walking, carpooling, or using public transportation. By not driving three times a week, you can have a tremendous impact in fighting global warming.
